The Conference
Showcasing Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Research
2nd May 2020

This year's Durham Castle Conference is based on the theme of 'The challenges of a changing world'.  This interdisciplinary conference welcomes postgraduate students from across the North East of England to present their research on a range of topics surrounding the idea of this theme. We welcome speakers from all research backgrounds! 

 

The Conference will be held at the beautiful Durham Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and presented by Durham's University College Middle Common Room, this conference will be a wonderful experience for both those presenting and those attending! In addition to the main conference, the conference will culminate in a formal dinner to be held within the castle. More details will be announced soon.

 

We have now opened registration and invitations for both attendance and presentations at the conference. Speaker sessions will last 15 minutes, with five minutes afterward reserved for questions. Postgraduates from all disciplines are welcome to apply!

Keynote & Panel Speakers

We are very pleased to announce our Keynote and Panel Debate speakers below! We are thrilled to welcome Etienne Stott MBE to give a Keynote speech at the conference, where he will be discussing his efforts towards raising awareness for climate action. 

It is also a pleasure to announce our guest speakers who will form the Panel Debate on 'Climate Change: the point of no return?'

 

Etienne Stott MBE
Keynote Speaker

Etienne Stott MBE is an English slalom canoeist who achieved Olympic gold medal in the  2012 Summer Olympics in London. Since retiring from the sport, Etienne has become an active member of Extinction Rebellion, and Champions for Earth. 

Elizabeth Lewis
Panel Member

Dr Elizabeth Lewis is a lecturer in Computational Hydrology at Newcastle University and has been a researcher at Newcastle since 2015. Elizabeth's research specialises in hydrological data, hydrological modelling and climate impacts.

Richard Holden MP
Panel Member

Richard Holden is a British Conservative Party politician, who is the newly elected Member of Parliament for North West Durham. Prior to becoming an MP, he had worked as a special adviser in a number of government departments.

Rachel Featherstone
Panel Member

Rachel is a Senior Lecturer in Research Methods at Teesside University, and graduated from Durham University with a Masters Degree in Politics. Rachel was also the Green Party's lead MEP candidate for the North East in the 2019 European elections.

Howard Porter
Panel Member

Dr Porter is the CEO of BEAMA, the Trade body for the UK electrical manufacturing industry. He has been in this post for 10 years. He is the Chairman of the implementation board of the Each Home Counts review of residential energy efficiency

Simon Hogg
Panel Member

Simon Hogg is a Professor in Renewable Energy, and currently the Head of the Department of Engineering at Durham University. Simon is also a member of the Durham Energy Institute Advisory Board in the Durham Energy Institute.

Kirill Holstov
Panel Member

Kirill is the climate change rep of the North East of England in Institution of Civil Engineers. In his company (AECOM), he interacts with UK&I sustainability directors and try purpose solutions on how to improve their impacts.

Please click the button below and fill in the presentation submission form. All speakers will be asked to give a 15-minute presentation, following by 5 minutes for questions.  Please include a short abstract briefly describing your presentation. Postgraduates from all discplines are welcome to apply!

 

Additionally, we are holding a poster session, for those interested in presenting a poster at the conference. Poster applications are welcome from all guests with research to share, not just those giving a talk. The deadline for application for both poster and speaker applications is 2nd April.
