The Thorp-Powers Society

The newly titled ‘Thorp-Powers Society’  aims to bring together current and past MCR members to critically engage on timely issues.

It aims to expose participants to differing perspectives and to raise money for charity. This is in addition to the tradition of celebrating the contributions of those within our MCR.

A Thorp-Powers gathering offers an opportunity for us to step outside our respective echo chambers into a secure space where difficult topics can be discussed in a respectful manner.

The objective of such gatherings is for us all to leave with a different perspective on an important issue.

Such a gathering consists of a formal dinner and panel debate, ideally once per term. A suitable charity is picked for each event, relating to the topic of discussion.

Our next meeting is on Saturday 5th March 2022 and will be joined by astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell.
