An official website of University College, Durham University. Here's how you know.
About us
University College (also known affectionately as Castle) welcomes you to the Middle Common Room (MCR)!
Castle MCR is a body of postgraduate students (including Taught Masters, Research Masters, PGCE and PhD Students). We are one of the largest postgraduate communities at Durham University and in the North East of England.
Castle MCR is a thriving, diverse, accepting and supportive community that is here to make sure that you have the best possible experience as part of University College and Durham University. We are very proud to call Castle our home and the centre of our University life!
We feel like Durham University's slogan, 'shaped by the past, creating the future' sums us up well. We are always striving to be more progressive and inclusive whilst remembering our traditions.
Past
Present
'The MCR' also refers to our physical common room, The Maurice Tucker Room, which can be found at the foot of the Castle Keep. Access to this room is exclusively for Castle MCR Members.
Castle MCR co-exists with the body of Undergraduate students in University College, the
Junior Common Room (JCR). Additionally, the body of senior members of staff, the Senior Common Room (SCR).
The University College crest is shared by all three common rooms and everyone else
who is part of the college.
Opportunities
From formals in The Great Hall, socialising in the Undercroft Bar, working in the College Library or attending exciting lectures from numerous leading academics, Castle offers something for everyone across all common rooms! There is no place quite like a 11th century Norman Castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site to study and socialise.
There are so many opportunities here that help our postgraduates to thrive:
If you are joining us in Castle MCR, we can't wait for you to bring your ideas and passions to help make Castle a better place.
Please don't hesitate to contact us, the Castle MCR Executive Committee (Exec), with any queries, questions or ideas, now or in the future.
With best wishes,
