College Facilities

A few of the college facilities include:

The Undercroft Bar (Undie)

The oldest student bar in the world, the beloved ‘Undie’ is situated beneath the Great Hall, and is open to all members of Castle and their visitors in the evenings from 7.30pm. On nights of Formal Dinner, it is open from 6.30pm for the sale of wines, and plays host to other events (open-mic nights, live music, pub quizzes) throughout the year.

If you ever have any need for them or wish to make comments or suggestions, they are always happy to receive them!

Lowe Library

Named in honour of William Douglas Lowe (1879-1922). A tutor in Classics at the College since 1903, he became Bursar and Censor of University College in 1913. He also took a keen interest in rowing, and the development of Durham's OTC. At the outbreak of World War I he became an officer in the Durham Light Infantry, eventually commanding the 18th Battalion, DLI. The library is located to the left of the entrance to the Great Hall. It provides a spacious, quiet and comfortable working environment. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and is self-service.

The Chapels

Within college there are two chapels: the 11th-century Norman Chapel (left) and the 16th-century Tunstall Chapel (right), within which regular services are held. For more information, please ask a member of the MCR Exec or the Chaplain.
